Veronica - "If you put marker on it, it'll never come off."
Katherine - "It is in the pumpkin family, it's suppose to be orange."
Tessa - Tessa thinks the gourd was beside a pumpkin in the pumpkin patch and turned it orange."
Kairos - "Because there's so many orange and pumpkins are different colours."
Payton - "I think some people want to colour it and make it look like a pumpkin."
Sofia - "It's suppose to be an orange gourd. It's now turning orange."
Esther - "Maybe someone painted it."
Evangeline - "It doesn't turn brown but turns orange when it's molding."
Evangeline - "Maybe the inside is orange and that's why it's orange on the outside."
During our discussion some students decided that someone painted the gourd or someone coloured it with orange marker. So we tested these theories. We put marker and paint on the gourd and let it dry. During our afternoon centre time we took wet paper towel to see if the orange marker and paint would come off the gourd. IT DID!!! Now we know that no one coloured or painted our gourd.
We even had some friends creating books at our science centre about our question.
The paint and marker washed off.
We also searched what gourds could look like. We found a picture that looks similar to ours.
We noticed that gourds and squash can be a mixture of colours. Now our students are interested in finding out about whether it's a gourd or a squash. Our next step in our inquiry will be to cut it open!
