Snow, Snow and More Snow!

Can you guess what our Kindergartens love to do with the snow?

We'll give you some hints...

They love to EAT SNOW!

At our Science table we decided to bring some snow into our classroom and watch to see what happens to it.

What is happening to our snow?

Ralph - "It's melting from the sun"
Kairos - "It's melting because snow melts when the sun comes up"
Edna - "It's melting because somebody is touching the snow"
Ryker - "It's melting because it needs fresh air and there isn't fresh air in here"
Evangeline - "The snow is melting because it's hot in the classroom, because it's by the heater and the heater is hot"
Tamit - "It's melting because inside it's hot and outside it's cold"
Katherine - "It's turning into water because when water gets cold it freezes and it turns into snow and ice. When it gets warm again it goes back into water."

Our snow MELTED!

We then showed our friends what our snow looked like after it melted.

It had sand and rocks in it.

Is it a good idea to eat the snow?

Abrahim - "No, it's gonna hurt."
Veronica - "No, it will make you sick."
Logan - "There's germs in it."
Felix - "It will make you sick."
Peyton - "If it's yellow than it's dirty."

How did the rocks and sand get inside the snow?

Ryker - "God made them with rocks. He had tiny bits of rocks and put them inside the middle of the snow. Jesus did a miracle and put it in the middle of the snow and not on top of the snow."
Lucas - "Maybe God changed the snow up. He mixed the snow up with rocks.
Dylan - "It fell from the sky."

Miss B - "When the snow falls from the sky, there are rocks in it?"
Melody - "Yes!"
John - "I don't think so because I saw on the ground there's rocks on the ground and that's how it gets in it."

After our classroom discussion we still noticed our friends eating snow outside.....

Tamit - "I'm tasting the falling snow to see if there's rocks in it."
Evangeline - "We're only eating the fallen snow. It's clean."

Fire Safety Presentation

Today we had a wonderful and informative presentation regarding fire safety.

Our kindergartens learned what to do if they are ever around a fire.

We learned:

1. To crawl underneath the smoke where the air is clearer and cooler.
2. To NEVER hide from a fire fighter.
3. The alarm signals that there might be a fire and to get to a safe place.
4. To STOP, DROP and ROLL if your clothes catch fire.
5. 911 is the number to call if you detect a fire.

At home, it might be a good idea to talk to your child about the different locations you can exit your house. You should also pick a place outside your home as the designated spot to meet if your house ever catches on fire and you need to evacuate.

If there's smoke, crawl UNDER it.

STOP, DROP AND ROLL if your clothes catch fire. Make sure to cover your face.

Mme. Vadeboncoeur was our "volunteer" firefighter.

Robots

A few weeks ago in our block centre we noticed our friends making "robots" out of our K'Nex toys. When we switched our toys to unifiix cubes we noticed that they were still interested in making robots.

"The robot only moves if you put it on the floor and when you push the wheels back it sweeps up stuff. It's a sweeping robot." - Tessa

We asked our students if they wanted to build their own robot out of recycled materials.

Thank you to all of our families who sent in recycled materials!

We "heard" lots of problem solving!

"It won't stick, I need more glue."
"It keeps falling apart. I put too much on it."
"I don't know how to make a robot." "I can help you!"

We saw lots of friends sharing materials and working together to help fix their robot. We saw lots of TEAMWORK!

Remembrance Day

We have been talking about Remembrance Day this week and focusing on Peace.

Try reading our Poppy poem at home and see if your child can say it along with you.

We discussed what a Peace Maker and a Peace Breaker might look like in our class.

We've had a lot of discussion in our classroom lately about using kind words and being kind friends.

We read the story Chrysanthemum. It's about a girl that has a really long name and her classmates were making fun of her because of it.

We talked about how saying unkind words can hurt someone's heart. We decided to cut out a heart using construction paper. We showed our friends what happens to a heart when someone is unkind to them.

We explained to our students that if they are thinking about unkind words that they should stop and think about if it's a good idea to say those words out loud. Our wrinkled heart shows that it's hard to take back unkind words even if you say "I'm sorry."

We then had our friends write their name on a bandaid. This represented that they will do their best to be kind to others.
