Plasticine Art

During our whole group gathering we read two books by Barbara Reid, The Subway Mouse and The Golden Goose. Our friends loved how the pictures were done in plasticine. We decided to provide plasticine at our art table these past two weeks to see what our friends could create.

Take a look at these beautiful creations and how our friends describe their masterpiece!

"I saw a show on my Mom's computer. It was somebody making a cake and it was Baby Groot. I used brown plasticine. I scratched it with a knife to make the branches" - Evangeline

"It's my garden. For the grass I mixed yellow and green together and then I just added yellow to make the sun. I just spread it out with my fingers." - Melody

"We made a kitty in the garden playing and she's eating her food and she's watching shooting stars and she's looking at the Northern Lights. We just pressed them so hard with our hands." - Charlie

"I made the flower." - Tamit

"It's me eating peanut butter and watermelon. The first thing I did was make my body. Then after I made my hair. Then after I made the watermelon, then my marshmallow, then the peanut butter. I mixed the plasticine with yellow and a lot of colours." - Ninya

"It's sort of like a Northern Lights. Blue for the sky, brown for the ground, green for the grass and red for the red paint. I used my hands to push it on the plate. Black plasticine for the dark clouds. I used a knife to spread the red plasticine out." - Sofia

"I made a storm. These fireballs are coming down and all the people were looking for what to get out of the firestorm. I used blue and peach colour to make the part of the storm. I put it on the plate and I spread it with my hands." - Esther

"It's all of everything in the entire world. The brown things are the beach, the green things are the school, and the peach is where people live. The red is the Canada and the blue is something different so the blue is the trees." - Payton

WOW! Look at all our readers!

Throughout the year we have been learning about our high frequency words. We call them "Popcorn words" and "les mots étoile." Take a look at our learning!

Esther used some letter pasta to make les mots étoile.

Dylan often finds a white board during centre time and prints the popcorn words.

Charlie and Sofia decided to take turns rolling a cube with les mot étoile. We love sharing!

During carpet time we have a lot of friends who try to read our popcorn words out loud. WE HAVE READERS!!!!

We even use technology to learn our words! Some of our friends used the SmartBoard to print them. We found a fun app called QR codes where the students scan the code and a French or English word will pop up for them to read. We worked in partners for this game. One friend scanned the codes while the other friend printed the work on a clipboard. GREAT TEAMWORK!

Our friends often come to show us the high frequency word they found in a book they were looking through.

Today, we introduced the game Jenga with a bit of a twist to it. We added our high frequency words to each tile. When they successfully pulled out the tile they had to read the word out loud.

Ask your child tonight if they can find any popcorn words in their storybooks at home.

Our Inukshuk Inquiry

What do you want to know about Inukshuk's?

"I wonder if Inukshuk's move?" - Melody
"I wonder if they are big or small?" - Veronica
"How many rocks are they?" - Lucas
"I wonder how they could carry the rocks?" - Sofia
"I wonder when they're done making them if they give them names?" - Charlie
"I wonder if they can draw?" - Lena
"How do Inukshuk's tell you which way to go?" - Kairos

Our friends had tons of fun building Inukshuks in almost every area of our classroom!

Logan and Dylan decided to print some popcorn words inside their Inukshuk.

After several days of discussions around Inukshuks, we asked our friends what they have learned.

"They are a sign of Friendship." - Katherine
"They tell you where to fish." -  Melody
"A place to hunt." - Esther
"They tell you different places to go." - Evangeline
"There are different shapes of Inukshuks." - Katherine

We had some grade 5/6 students come help us create Inukshuks out of rocks.
